Dental emergencies don't wait for clinic hours. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. This guide gives you clear, immediate action steps for every common dental emergency. The first action for any dental emergency: call Emitsmile at +91 86678 77399.

Emergency 1: Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical — act within 30-60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part) — never touch the root
  • Rinse gently with clean water if it's dirty — do NOT scrub, and do NOT use soap
  • Try to gently reinsert it into the socket — bite down gently on clean cloth to hold it in place
  • If reinsertion isn't possible: keep the tooth in milk, or between your cheek and gum — NOT in water, NOT wrapped in tissue
  • Come to Emitsmile immediately — teeth reimplanted within 30-60 minutes have the highest survival rates
  • Do NOT let the root dry out — this kills the cells needed for reattachment

Emergency 2: Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • If a sharp edge is cutting your cheek or tongue, cover it with sugarless chewing gum or orthodontic wax
  • Save any pieces of the tooth — bring them in a container of water or milk
  • Apply cold compress to the cheek if there is swelling
  • Call us for a same-day appointment — exposed dentine is immediately painful and vulnerable to decay
  • Do NOT delay — a broken tooth needs prompt assessment and protection

Emergency 3: Severe Toothache

  • Rinse mouth with warm water
  • Gently floss around the painful tooth — food debris trapped between teeth can cause sudden severe pain
  • Take ibuprofen (recommended for dental pain — anti-inflammatory action) or paracetamol as per package instructions
  • Apply a cold compress to the cheek — never heat for toothache
  • Do NOT apply aspirin or any tablet directly onto your gum — it causes chemical burns
  • Do NOT apply heat — this increases blood flow and worsens the pain
  • Call us immediately — severe spontaneous toothache means infection or abscess requiring urgent treatment

Emergency 4: Facial Swelling / Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a serious infection that must be treated urgently. Do not wait.

  • Apply cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Take OTC painkiller for pain relief
  • Do NOT attempt to drain it yourself — this risks spreading infection
  • If swelling affects your breathing, swallowing, or you feel feverish and very unwell — go to hospital A&E immediately. A spreading dental abscess can be life-threatening.
  • Otherwise: call Emitsmile now at +91 86678 77399 for urgent assessment

Emergency 5: Lost Filling or Crown

  • Keep the filling or crown if it came out fully — bring it to your appointment
  • Temporary fix: press sugarless chewing gum or dental cement (available at pharmacies) gently into the cavity — this protects the exposed tooth structure
  • Avoid chewing on that side — exposed dentine is sensitive and vulnerable
  • Call for the earliest available appointment — don't leave exposed tooth structure for long as it can decay rapidly or fracture
  • Do NOT use super glue or household adhesive to reattach a crown

Emergency 6: Soft Tissue Injury (Bitten Tongue or Lip)

  • Rinse gently with clean salt water
  • Apply gentle, steady pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to control bleeding
  • Apply cold compress to reduce swelling
  • If bleeding does not stop within 15-20 minutes or the wound is deep — go to hospital A&E for assessment; stitches may be needed
