How to Care for Braces: A Complete Patient Guide

Dr. Selvakumar R, BDS MDS (Orthodontics) April 2026 5 min read
Braces Care Guide

Getting braces is a commitment — typically 18 to 24 months of your life. The final result you achieve depends not just on the orthodontist's skill, but on how consistently you care for your braces throughout treatment. This guide covers everything you need to know to protect your teeth, maintain your appliance, and ensure your smile is as beautiful as possible when the braces come off.

Brushing with Braces

Braces create dozens of additional surfaces for plaque to accumulate — around brackets, under wires, between teeth. Standard twice-daily brushing is insufficient. Here is the correct protocol:

  • Brush after every meal — minimum 3 times daily, ideally after breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Use a soft orthodontic-head brush — the V-shaped or rounded-end bristle design is engineered to clean around brackets effectively
  • Angle above the bracket first — position brush at 45° to the gum line, clean the gum margin and the top of each bracket
  • Then angle below the bracket — tilt brush the other direction to clean the wire and the bottom surface of each bracket
  • Clean each bracket individually — don't just scrub across; spend a moment on each tooth
  • Electric toothbrushes are excellent for braces — they maintain consistent pressure and angle, and many have orthodontic brush heads designed for this purpose
  • Fluoride toothpaste is essential — braces trap acid and sugar against enamel; fluoride actively strengthens enamel against demineralisation
  • Brush for 2+ minutes — rinse, then inspect in a mirror for white or yellow spots near brackets which indicate plaque buildup

Flossing with Braces

Flossing with braces is more complex but absolutely essential. The wire prevents standard flossing technique. Here are your options:

  • Floss threaders — a small plastic needle that allows you to thread floss under the archwire. Thread the floss through the loop, push the threader under the wire between two teeth, then floss normally. Repeat for every gap.
  • Orthodontic floss — has a stiff tip at one end that acts as its own threader, making the process faster
  • Water flossers (Waterpik) — highly recommended for braces. The pressurised water jet effectively removes food and plaque from under wires and between brackets without threading. Use daily as a supplement to or replacement for string floss.
  • Interdental brushes — small bottle-brush shaped cleaners that fit between brackets and teeth for quick between-meal cleaning

Never skip flossing because it's difficult. Braces trap food and plaque precisely at the contact points between teeth — exactly where cavities form. White spots or decay found after braces are removed are one of the most disappointing outcomes in orthodontics, and entirely preventable.

Foods to Absolutely Avoid with Braces

Hard Foods — Break Brackets and Bend Wires

  • Ice cubes (never chew)
  • Hard candy and boiled sweets
  • Raw whole carrots and apples (cut into small pieces first)
  • Hard biscuits and rusk
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Whole nuts
  • Corn on the cob (cut off the cob)
  • Hard pizza crusts

Sticky Foods — Pull Brackets Off

  • Chewing gum (any type)
  • Toffee, caramel, and chewy candy
  • Paan and betel nut preparations
  • Mochi and rice cakes
  • Dried fruit (dates, raisins)
  • Chewy bread (bagels, thick rotis)

Fizzy Drinks — Enamel Erosion Around Brackets

Carbonated drinks are acidic. Combined with the sugar content and the fact that braces hold liquid against enamel, regular consumption causes demineralisation around brackets — leaving permanent white spots on teeth even after braces are removed. These marks are a cosmetic consequence that can last a lifetime. Switch to water.

Foods That Are Safe with Braces

  • Soft fruits (banana, grapes, berries)
  • Curd rice, dal rice
  • Noodles and soft pasta
  • Soft rotis and idli
  • Cut fruit and cooked vegetables
  • Dairy products (milk, yogurt, paneer)
  • Eggs (scrambled or boiled)
  • Fish and tender chicken

What to Do When a Bracket Breaks

Bracket breakages happen — usually after eating something hard or sticky despite the guidelines. Here is what to do:

  • Don't panic — a loose bracket is not a dental emergency, but it does need attention
  • Call Emitsmile at +91 86678 77399 to schedule a repair appointment at the earliest opportunity
  • Keep the bracket if it has come off completely — bring it to your appointment in a small bag or container
  • If a wire is poking — cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax (provided in your care kit) to protect your cheek. Do not try to cut or bend the wire yourself.
  • Never try to fix it yourself — you risk damaging the wire, adjacent brackets, or your tooth

Attending Adjustment Appointments

Adjustment appointments occur every 4-6 weeks. At each visit, Dr. Selvakumar changes the archwire or increases its tension, actively moving your teeth. These appointments are the engine of your treatment — missing them is not simply inconvenient, it extends your total treatment time. If you need to cancel, reschedule at the earliest possible date — never leave a gap of more than 8 weeks without rescheduling.

Retainers — The Most Important Phase

When your braces come off, your teeth are in their new positions — but the bone and ligament supporting them have not fully stabilised. Retainers hold your teeth in position while the bone remodels and hardens around the new alignment. Skipping retainer wear is the single most common reason teeth shift back after orthodontic treatment — undoing months or years of work.

Wear your retainers exactly as Dr. Selvakumar prescribes — typically full-time for the first 3-6 months, then nights only ongoing. For most patients, some degree of retainer wear for life is recommended to prevent natural age-related shifting.

At Emitsmile Hosur, we give every braces patient an orthodontic care kit — soft brush, interdental brush, orthodontic wax, and floss threaders — along with a comprehensive care guide. Our team is available to answer your questions at every stage of treatment.

The Bottom Line

Braces are a partnership between you and your orthodontist. Dr. Selvakumar provides the expertise, the appliance, and the clinical skill — but your daily hygiene, food choices, and attendance at appointments determine your final result. Patients who follow the protocol consistently finish on time with beautiful, healthy teeth. Those who don't risk longer treatment, white spot lesions, or bracket breakages that add months to their journey. The effort you put in now directly determines the smile you leave with.
